The two greatest strokes of luck that can happen to a painter are:-

(1) to be Spanish
(2) to be called Dali........
by Salvador Dali (1904 - 1989)

Closely identified with Surrealism, the words "neurotic", "egocentric" and "Lunacy" are frequently used when describing Salvador Dali, but few can deny the great importance of his contribution to the art world of the 20th Century. In fact, he is as great as his fellow countryman, Picasso. Dali himself said: "Picasso is perhaps a minor painter, but he is the most destructive genius of modern times". Picasso called Dali "an outboard motor that's always running".

An artist of unsurpassed visionary perception, Salvador Dali was born in Figueres, Spain in 1904. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, he settled in Paris, the Mecca of Art in 1924, where he made a tremendous artistic impact on the surrealistic movement. An impact that has made his name synonymous with surrealism.

Exceptional fantasy, astounding genius and originality without equal characterise his artistic works. Dali's accomplishment as a painter, sculptor , writer and poet has ensured him an immortal place in the history of art. His death was mourned by the art community throughout the world. But his works will be immortalised and his legend will live on.

Surrealism translates into images the perception of the senses that cannot be put into words or conventional pictures. It is thought expressed into artistic form which lies outside the control of reason and independent of any aesthetic or moral worry. Dali's special triumph has been his ability to reach into the magical realm of the human psyche and reveal to us what he has perceived.

The great master's works are exhibited in some of the world's most renowed museums and art galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Tate Gallery of London; the National Gallery Art in Washington and the Galleria Francois Petit in Paris.

Dali is, of course, the undisputed master of surrealism. Demand for his works would be even greater now with his passing. For his works have indeed become rare and much sought-after. They bear the priceless signature of Dali.
